The men in the pit couldn't hear, and if they could they wouldn't care about the diatribe being hurled at them across the asphalt.
They only paused because it was fucking hot, and they'd take any excuse to try to catch their breaths. The day is cloudy which makes it worse, you couldn't say it was "brutal" out or "a real scorcher." You just get the feeling of being below the surface of a bathtub. A bathtub you had overestimated how far to H the faucet should twist. And now you pretend to no one that you are tough enough to take the heat as you slide below the surface.
The man who had been yelling got on a bus or went inside somewhere, he just kind of vanished. The workers in the pit turned their eyes back down to their digging. They fade into the semi urban flora, hard hats like over-sized mushrooms poking up out of the earth. I suppose in the color assignment of nature, fluorescent yellow and orange would indicate they are poisonous. Or at least they were pretending to be poisonous.
Brett and I walked down to the main drag of town because I did not do any research into what time the farmer's market started, and now we had thirty minutes to kill until we could return to the shaded park and fill our bags with fresh peaches.
I had suggested we go check out a bookstore on the main street. I have been meaning to go inside for a month or two. I think it was some occult shop until a recently, I remember there was taxidermy of a fox in the window. Maybe that still exists somewhere else but I am pretty sure it is a new book store, a goddamn bookstore opening up in our little townburbhood. I didn't have too much hope for what the bookstore contained, but it felt important to go inside. I wanted to show that I support their existence, I want books to exist and I want people to earn a living selling books and I want to step inside and be greeted by a wave of new book smell and air con turned all the way down to frigid.
It is locked, no one is earning a living selling books in Bellevue. I suggest we get ice cream, Brett suggest we look in the hardware for some bit of plumbing to fix his shower. They have AC.
